12 metropolises in the C40 network promise to invest in the green economy, abandoning fossil sources.

Founded in 2005 by then Mayor of London, C40 is an alliance of mayors of the world's major cities. Their purpose? To reduce their greenhouse gas emissions through meaningful, measurable, replicable and sustainable programs. To date, 96 cities have joined, bringing together more than 800 million people and generating a quarter of the global GDP. So far, 24 of them have promised to reach 100% of energy from renewable sources by 2030; 18 have banned disposable plastic items; 17 have provided restrictions for the most polluting vehicles.

New York, London, Los Angeles, Berlin, Bristol, Cape Town, Durban, Milan, New Orleans, Oslo, Pittsburgh, Vancouver. These are the 12 metropolises, all members of the C40 international network, that have committed themselves to a truly sustainable recovery after the trauma of the pandemic. This means, first of all, to shift their financial investments from fossil fuels to the green economy. The 12 mayors, representing 36 million citizens, promise to take a very different path. "We are determined to lead the way by divesting our financial assets from fossil fuel companies and promoting investment in the green economy wherever possible. All this out of responsibility for the environment and health", they stress, "but also for a purely economic issue. The coal, oil and natural gas sectors face too uncertain prospects. And are therefore risky from a financial point of view".

In addition to intervening on investments managed directly by their administration, the mayors promise to dialogue with pension funds, private financial institutions and governments to convince them to do the same. This commitment, they assure, will not be purely ideal. In fact, the twelve signatories will monitor their progress and submit an annual report to C40. (source: lifegate.it)
