International Year of Plant Health 2020

Plants are the source of the air we breathe and most of the food we eat, yet how to keep them healthy is often ignored. This can have devastating results: the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations estimates that up to 40 percent of food crops are lost due to plant pests and diseases annually. This leaves millions of people without enough food to eat and seriously damages agriculture—the primary source of income for rural poor communities. For these and more reasons, 2020 has been named the International Year of Plant Health by the United Nations General Assembly.

Bees and pollinating insects play a very important role in pollination and the health of plant ecosystems. Pesticides and pollution are causing a significant reduction in the insect population, which is reaching near non-return levels, with very serious consequences for crops, considering that 2/3 of our food depends on bees and pollinating insects.

Everybody can do their part. Buy local organic food, support local farmers and beekeepers, buy local organic honey and bees products. Try our reusable beeswax food wraps to keep your food fresh.
