All the most resilient nations are islands in temperate latitudes.

All the most resilient nations are islands in temperate latitudes.

A study on the adverse effects of climate change on societies took into account several factors: extreme weather events, droughts, floods and the impact of population movements forced to migrate in order to survive. Some nations have more favorable starting conditions than others when it comes to climate change adaptation. Islands located in temperate latitudes with strong oceanic influence have the greatest likelihood that relatively stable conditions will continue despite the effects of global warming. When a nation finds itself unable to adapt, the research points out that it faces a concatenation of disasters, in which the first to occur is able to gain momentum and cause another - a mechanism known as "positive feedback". The study assesses which countries are able to recover from a potential collapse or avoid it altogether. The key factors selected are: the profitability of agriculture, the capacity to produce renewable energy and the cohesion of population centers.

Researchers have been looking at the causes of the collapse of complex systems, they say, so they have more time to better understand events and realize how interconnected they are. Shocks, in fact, are rapid, and to best cope with such upheavals you need to be prepared. (source: lifegate.it)
