Food loss and waste

Every year a huge amount of food goes lost and wasted. One-third of all food worldwide ends up in the garbage, with industrialised countries contributing the most. This has a huge impact on environment.

There are different ways industrialised countries could reduce their impact on the climate: one effective way is reducing food waste — one-third of all food produced worldwide ends up in the bin, with Europeans on average throwing away 95 kilograms (209 lbs) of food per person, per year. In low-income African countries south of the Sahara, it's only 6 kilograms (13 lbs).

Wastage in percent of total worldwide production (Source: FAO, Global food losses and food waste, 2011):

Cereals - 30% lost or wasted

Vegetables, fruits and tubers - 45% lost or wasted

Fish and seafood - 35% lost or wasted

Meat - 20% lost or wasted

Earth Thanks shop suggest two eco-friendly plastic free solutions, which everyone can use daily and save both food, money and the planet: store the leftovers of food safely in reusable silicone food bags and reusable beeswax food wrap.
